MW4 DMZ patch notes: Possum rework and DMZ fixes (28 Oct)
Infinity Ward's 28 October 2026 update reworks the Possum trait and fixes a run of DMZ loadout, backpack and reward bugs. We read the official notes, WhosImmortal's walkthrough and every DMZ guide and Hajin route on this site, and we say below what changed, what did not, and which of our pages now carry a notice. His video is embedded just below, so please watch it. We have not tested the update in game.

The short version
Infinity Ward posted a Modern Warfare 4 update on 28 October 2026. For DMZ the headline is a rework of the Possum trait: it can no longer be activated while the team that killed you is nearby, or until 4 minutes have passed. The rest of the DMZ list is bug fixes: a 3D Printer bug that could strip your Free Loadout, weapons that dropped or vanished when moved between slots, a missing Level 37 vest reward, an Airbase Access Card problem and Order ping markers. The notes also say several DMZ exploits were closed, and name none of them. We checked every DMZ guide and Hajin route on the site against the official notes. Four pages describe behaviour that changed, three carry a part that may be affected and is untested, one is a related note, and no route had to be retired. Everything below is official text or a named creator's opinion, and none of it was tested by us.

How to read this page
The official source is Infinity Ward's patch notes page for Modern Warfare 4 on callofduty.com, which keeps one dated block per update. This page follows the 28 October block, and it also reads the 23, 24 and 25 October blocks, because several changes in them touch our guides and we had not flagged them yet. The page prints no version number. WhosImmortal's video is a creator's walkthrough of the same update. Where he gives an opinion or a guess, we say it is his. Where the notes are vague, for example "closed several exploits", we say so and do not guess which exploits.
Possum, reworked
Their stated reason: Possum is meant to give a high level operator a second chance, but as it stood it was used as a combat mechanic and not as a survival mechanic. The change is meant to stop players getting straight back into the fight they just lost. The rule in the notes: Possum cannot be activated while the team that killed you is nearby, or until 4 minutes have passed. The wording leaves open whether both conditions apply or either one, and we have not tested which. They say the range and the duration can be tuned and that they will watch whether the change has the effect they want. Two bugs were fixed alongside it. Possum could revive a player who had already abandoned their Operator, which left that player unplayable. And a black screen could appear after a whole squad was eliminated while a teammate had Possum equipped.
What it does to advice on this site
Three of our guides describe Possum as a comeback you can take whenever you like. IceManIsaac's tip 1 is built on a downed or wiped player waiting as long as they want and then popping Possum. StoneMountain64 tells you to strip a body before you loot it because of Possum. McBread's trait picks rate Possum as the survival trait at the top of Warfighter. Each of those pages now carries a dated notice that says what changed. The creators' footage was recorded before the rework, so what they show is how Possum worked then. We do not know how large "nearby" is, or whether the 4 minutes run from your death. If you test it, those two numbers are the useful ones.

Every DMZ item in the 28 October notes
One row per DMZ line in the official notes, in the order they appear, with the Global fix that names DMZ at the end.
| Item | What the notes say | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Possum | Cannot be activated while the team that killed you is nearby, or until 4 minutes have passed. Range and duration are tunable. | Plan for a delay. Do not count on an instant comeback. |
| Possum revive bug | Possum could revive players who had already abandoned their Operator, putting them in an unplayable state. | Fixed. |
| Possum black screen | A black screen could appear after the whole squad was eliminated while a teammate had Possum equipped. | Fixed. |
| 3D Printer and Free Loadout | Using the 3D Printer to add items to the Backpack during deployment could make you deploy without your Free Loadout weapons or equipment. | Fixed. Our regain guide has a notice. |
| Exploits | Several DMZ exploits were closed. None are named. | Nothing to act on. We cannot say which routes it touches. |
| Moving a weapon to the Backpack | Weapons could unintentionally drop when moved from the Primary Weapon slot to the Backpack. | Fixed. |
| Level 37 reward | Players were not receiving the 3-Plate Armor Vest reward at DMZ Level 37. | Fixed. Our level guide has a notice. |
| Weapon storage Backpack | Weapons could disappear after repeatedly swapping weapon slots while using a Backpack with weapon storage. | Fixed. |
| Airbase Access Card | The card could not be upgraded during a Story Mission if it was stored in the Secure Slot. | Fixed. |
| Order markers | Automatically marked Order mission items could lose their Ping markers after you pinged a loot container. | Fixed. |
| Prestige from the DMZ FOB | Prestiging from the DMZ FOB now resets Multiplayer Loadouts correctly (listed under Global). | Fixed. |
| Known issues | The Patriot XMR Platinum Camo challenge shows wrong progress but can still be completed. Some Calling Card challenges do not track. Players who enter Classic Prestige through the DMZ menus cannot make new Multiplayer classes until old classes with relocked items are deleted. | Open. |
What the notes do not mention
No change is listed for loot tables, key spawns, Lieutenants, Commanders, extraction points, vendor prices, 3D Printer recipes or DMZ weapon tuning. That is not proof that nothing changed. The notes list only what Infinity Ward chose to list, and they said on 23 October that weapon tuning is bespoke in Multiplayer and in DMZ; the tuning in this update is under Multiplayer. So the Hajin map, the keys layer and the loot route data keep the confidence levels they had. If a creator shows a spawn that moved or a route that no longer works, we will mark it from that evidence and not from the notes' silence.
Earlier DMZ changes our guides had not flagged (23 to 25 October)
These sit in the earlier blocks of the same official page. We list the ones that touch something we publish.
| Date | What the notes say | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Oct | Drill Charge damage against enemy Colossus was decreased. | Our reading: Drill Charges do damage him. The explosive claims about Colossus on our pages stay unsettled. |
| 25 Oct | Players can no longer deploy with items in the Overflow Stash and must reconcile it first. | Stash mule and survival kit overflow tips. |
| 25 Oct | Buying saved Builds from modified Blueprints no longer charges the full cost of the original Blueprint. | Blueprint and Gunsmith costs. |
| 25 Oct | A bypass of the Hospital Elevator objective in the Critical Extraction Story Mission was fixed. | Story mission only. No loot route uses it. |
| 25 Oct | Lieutenant Intel unlock requirements and the eliminated mark on the Boss Board were fixed. | Lieutenant hunting. |
| 24 Oct | The Exfil helicopter could disappear while players were still inside. Fixed. | Extraction. |
| 24 Oct | Party Leaders can no longer pull teammates out of DMZ without consent, which had marked their Operators missing in action. | Squad play. |
| 23 Oct | UAV Towers can be stolen back from enemy control. | Overwatch and UAV tower tips. |
| 23 Oct | Disposable Parachutes have three uses. Gas Masks, including Durable Gas Masks, no longer break at once in radiation zones. | Irradiated Container runs and the parachute tips. |
| 23 to 25 Oct | Various exploits were closed in each block. None are named. | Nothing to act on. |
Multiplayer and global changes, briefly
Multiplayer got its first broad weapon tuning pass, aimed at normalising hit location damage for a more consistent time to kill and at helping SMGs. Several SMGs get arm and hand damage multipliers raised from 0.95 to 1.0, the PPSh-41 aims down sights faster (300 ms to 280 ms), the APOC-338 and FiNN LMG lose range, and the Han 86, Oden, Hyeon Burst and Patriot XMR change in different ways. Damage now interrupts Quick Fix health regeneration. Dive velocity is down 23% to blunt a sprint-jump dive exploit, with a fuller fix promised. Free For All keeps its score limit of 30 and now allows parties of two. Shipment 24/7, Kill Block 6v6 Gunfight and Gun Game join the playlist, and a set of camo, Calling Card and menu fixes are listed under Global. For exact numbers, read the official notes. The official Season 1 blog says Season 1 goes live at midnight Eastern on 6 November.
WhosImmortal's take
WhosImmortal covered the update the same day, reading the notes with commentary. On Possum he says this is not a nerf but a rework: it was being used as a PvP mechanic because players popped it and went straight back into the gunfight, and it is now more a tactical way to get back and not lose your character. He wonders whether people will camp out the four minutes, or just throw mines on your body when they wipe a squad. He says he does not think it is a nerf in any capacity and that it is still going to be a crazy strong trait. Of the 3D Printer deployment bug he says it is a super niche issue, fixed nonetheless. He calls the Quick Fix change a big one and expects the SMGs to feel more consistent. He says he expects the remaining known issues to be fixed over the weekend, early next week or with Season 1 on 6 November; that timing is his guess and not an official promise. He adds nothing about which DMZ exploits were closed.

What this changes on our map and guides
We went through every DMZ guide and every route on the Hajin map. Nothing was retired: we retire a route only on official notes or clear evidence, and there is none. Where a page describes behaviour that changed, it now carries a dated notice that says exactly what changed. Where a part may be affected and we cannot tell, it says untested.
| Our page | What the notes say | Status on our site |
|---|---|---|
| MW4 DMZ trait system (McBread) | Possum cannot be activated while the team that killed you is nearby, or until 4 minutes have passed. | Notice added. His Possum text describes the old rules. |
| IceManIsaac 30+ tips | The same Possum change. Since 25 Oct, items in the Overflow Stash must be reconciled before deploying. | Notice added. Tip 1 and the overflow tip describe the old rules. |
| StoneMountain64 37 tips | The same Possum change. On 25 Oct Drill Charge damage against Colossus was decreased. | Notice added. The Possum tips are affected, the Colossus tip may be, and the parachute tip fits the 23 Oct note. |
| Level unlocks 1 to 70 | The Level 37 3-Plate Armor Vest reward was not being granted. Fixed. | Notice added. |
| Loot routes hub | Nothing names a loot route. Drill Charge damage against Colossus was decreased on 25 Oct, and unnamed exploits were closed. | B Man's Colossus quick kill and menu tile trick marked may be affected, untested. Patched column updated for all 12 routes. |
| Iron Citadel gold key run | Drill Charge damage against Colossus was decreased on 25 Oct. | Colossus part marked may be affected, untested. The key chain has no official change. |
| 3D printer farming | The same Drill Charge change. The deploy bug fix concerns Free Loadout. | Colossus section marked may be affected, untested. Ingredient spots and recipes unchanged. |
| Regain: free kit to extraction | A 3D Printer and Backpack bug could remove your Free Loadout at deployment. Fixed. | Related notice added. The route is unchanged. |
| Chang-san bunker farm | Not in the notes. | Already patched on 25 October and retired from the map. Unchanged. |
| All other routes and guides | No change found for the Re-Education Center route, the compound loot farm, the three Irradiated Container guides, Peak Array, the Deadtown hillside, the solo Tank kill or the keys layer. | No route retired. |

What we checked, and where Wing Mait fits
We read the official notes and the video and compared them with our own pages. We did not play the update. Nothing in the notes redesigns the DMZ HUD, but they name several on-screen elements that a screen reader cares about: the Last Stand icon on the minimap, Tac-Map markers, Order and objective ping markers, the Boss Board indicators and the Overflow Stash check before deploying. Possum's new delay also means a Last Stand state is no longer an instant comeback. Reading on-screen text is what Wing Mait does. DMZ support is in development, and Wing Mait doesn't read game memory, inject anything or send inputs to the game.
Questions people ask
Quick answers about the 28 October 2026 MW4 DMZ patch notes.
What changed in MW4 DMZ on 28 October 2026?
Possum was reworked, and the notes list fixes for a 3D Printer bug that could remove your Free Loadout, weapons that dropped or vanished when moved between slots, the missing Level 37 vest reward, the Airbase Access Card in the Secure Slot, and Order ping markers. Several exploits were closed and none are named.
How does Possum work now?
You cannot activate it while the team that killed you is nearby, or until 4 minutes have passed. The notes say the range and the duration can be tuned. We have not tested the exact rule.
Did the update patch any DMZ loot routes?
The notes name none. The 25 October Drill Charge change may matter to a Colossus step, and unnamed exploits were closed, so we marked those parts as may be affected, untested. We retired no route.
Is the Chang-san bunker farm still patched?
Yes. It was patched on 25 October 2026 and its page is kept for reference. The 28 October notes do not mention it.
Which exploits were closed?
The notes do not say. They only say several DMZ exploits were closed.
When does Season 1 start?
The official Season 1 blog says 6 November, at midnight Eastern.
Where are the official patch notes?
